Chapter 1: Core security mechanism—the escrow system

What is escrow?

After an order is placed, the seller's crypto is locked in the platform's escrow system. The crypto is released only after the buyer marks the order as paid and the seller confirms receipt of payment.

Buyer places order → System locks seller's crypto → Buyer transfers payment → Seller verifies payment → Seller releases crypto → Order completed

The purpose of escrow

✅ Buyers do not have to worry about paying without receiving crypto.

✅ Sellers do not have to worry about releasing crypto without receiving payment.

However, escrow is not a cure-all. It protects transaction integrity, not the legitimacy of the source of funds. If the funds you receive are linked to fraud, your bank card may still be frozen, and escrow cannot prevent this.

Chapter 2: Breaking down common scam tactics

🚨 Type 1: Fake payment screenshots

Tactic: The buyer sends an edited transfer screenshot claiming that payment has been sent and pressures the seller to release the crypto. The seller releases the crypto without actually receiving payment, resulting in a loss.

Real case: In 2025, a user received a "bank transfer successful" screenshot showing the correct amount, time, and recipient account, but the payment never actually arrived. The scammer had edited the screenshot using photo-editing software.

How to avoid this scam:

• Never release crypto based on a screenshot alone. Always log in to your bank or payment app yourself to confirm that the payment has arrived.

• Only proceed after confirming receipt. Do not let phrases such as "I need this urgently" or "limited time" rush you.

🚨 Type 2: Third-party payment / payment-on-behalf fraud

Tactic: The buyer transfers funds using a third-party account rather than their own identity-verified account. If the source of funds in that third-party account is linked to fraud, the seller may receive suspicious funds and have their bank card frozen.

Why this is dangerous: Bank risk-control systems trace the flow of funds. If a transaction is linked to a victim's police report, accounts involved in the fund flow may be frozen and investigated.

How to avoid this scam:

✅ Require that the buyer's payment account name exactly matches the name used for identity verification on the platform.

✅ Refuse transfers from company accounts, third parties, or accounts not belonging to the buyer.

✅ Cancel the order immediately if the account name does not match.

🚨 Type 3: Triangle scam

Tactic: This is a more complex scam involving three parties:

1. Scammer A contacts seller B, saying, "I want to buy your USDT."

2. Scammer A also contacts buyer C, saying, "I want to sell you USDT."

3. Buyer C transfers payment to seller B, and seller B releases USDT to scammer A.

Result: Seller B receives the buyer's payment, but buyer C never receives any USDT and may file a police report. Seller B's bank card may be frozen, while scammer A has already disappeared.

How to spot it:

• The payer's name does not match the identity verification name of the person who placed the order.

• The buyer claims that "a friend paid on my behalf" or "a coworker sent the transfer."

• The counterparty's account was recently registered.

How to avoid this scam:

• Always confirm that the payer is the account holder and that the account name matches their identity verification information.

• Refuse any request involving "paying on someone's behalf" or "buying on someone's behalf."

🚨 Type 4: Customer service impersonation / phishing scams

Tactic: Scammers impersonate exchange customer support and contact users via direct messages on Telegram, WeChat, or X. They may claim that there is "an issue with your account," that you "need to verify," or that you need to "upgrade your security level." They then guide users to click phishing links or provide API keys or 2FA codes.

Real case: A user received a Telegram message from "xxx customer service" with a link asking them to "verify their account." The user entered their login password and 2FA code on the linked page, and their account was compromised within minutes.

How to avoid this scam:

✅ Exchange support will never proactively message you asking for transfers or passwords

✅ Complete all actions within the official app or website.

✅ Never click links sent by strangers.

✅ Never share your API keys, private keys, or 2FA codes with anyone.

🚨 Type 5: Chargeback fraud

Tactic: The buyer pays using a credit card or another payment method that supports chargebacks. After receiving the USDT, they file a chargeback with their bank, claiming that the transaction was "unauthorized" or "fraudulent." The bank may then deduct the amount from the seller's account, even though the seller has already released the USDT.

High-risk payment methods: Credit cards and certain e-wallets that support dispute-based refunds.

How to avoid this scam:

✅ Prioritize instant, irreversible payment methods, such as bank transfers, where permitted.

✅ Stay cautious with large transactions.

✅ Keep complete records of transactions and chat history.

🚨 Type 6: Price manipulation / rapid buy-sell schemes

Tactic: Scammers buy or sell large amounts within a short period, artificially creating price swings. Once the price is pushed up, other buyers may follow the trend and buy in, allowing the scammer to sell at a higher price before the price drops.

How to avoid this scam:

✅ Do not chase sudden price swings. Set a reasonable price range.

✅ Reference fair prices across multiple markets.

✅ Be cautious of ads showing unusual price swings within a short period.

🚨 Type 7: Cross-platform arbitrage money laundering

Tactic: Scammers ask you to receive payment on one platform but release USDT on another. Operating across platforms can make it more difficult to trace the fund flow.

How to avoid this scam:

✅ Refuse any request to operate across platforms.

✅ Insist on completing the entire transaction on a single platform.

Chapter 3: Preventing frozen bank cards (must-read for sellers)

Main causes of frozen bank cards

Based on past transaction data, many P2P bank card freezes stem from the following causes rather than exchange system issues:

1. The payment account name does not match the identity verification name.

2. The source of funds is unclear or linked to fraud.

3. Operating rules are violated, including improper payment remarks or other non-compliant behavior.

How to prevent frozen bank cards

1. Verify identity information

Banks require the name, ID number, and bank card number to all match. Any mismatch → failed transaction + frozen bank card (within 24 hours).

✅ Before receiving payment, verify that the buyer's payment account name matches the name used for identity verification on the platform.

✅ Refuse payments on behalf of others, from company accounts, or from accounts not belonging to the buyer.

2. Check the source of funds

Bank risk-control systems trace the flow of funds. If a transaction originates from a fraud victim, your account may be frozen.

✅ For first-time transactions, consider using a regularly used bank account with a clear transaction history.

✅ Avoid using funds from "cash deposits" for transactions. (Banks usually consider these suspicious.)

✅ For suspicious large transactions, you may ask the buyer to provide proof of the source of funds.

3. Use a dedicated account

✅ Consider opening a separate bank account dedicated to P2P trading

✅ Avoid mixing it with your salary account, mortgage account, or everyday spending account.

❌ Do not use the same bank card to receive payments across multiple P2P platforms.

4. Use compliant payment remarks

❌ Never include sensitive keywords in the transfer remarks, such as "USDT," "BTC," "top-up," "digital currency," or "loan."

✅ Leave the remarks blank or use neutral terms like "transfer," "repayment," or "living expenses."

Banks flag large transfers with remarks like "digital currency" for risk review.
